We all know the feeling: you look down at your tile floor and it just doesn’t have that clean and pristine feeling anymore. Despite your diligent cleaning, the grout has collected debris and gone from white to a light shade of speckled brown and the tile feels sticky from collected cleaner residue. It’s time for a good deep cleaning of your tiles and grout. Serv R Us is an Atlanta-area authority on tile and grout cleaning – in fact, this is one of our most requested services. However, if you’re the type who likes to use a little elbow grease, below are a few do-it-yourself grout and tile cleaning tips you can try.
Method 1: Vinegar – Not Safe For Use On Natural Tile
If your tile is synthetic, such as ceramic or porcelain, vinegar can be a good way to remove some of the residue from cleaners that can build up on stone over time, while also lifting some of the common natural staining agents from grout. However, please note this method should not be used on natural stone tile, such as granite, marble, quartz or slate.
In a spray bottle, mix a solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar. Spray the solution on the tile and grout and allow it to sit for for several minutes. Scrub the grout vigorously using a toothbrush or scrub brush until the stain starts to lift. Once you are satisfied with the appearance of the grout, use a wet mop to clean the vinegar mixture from the tiles, as well as what remains on the grout.
Method 2: Baking Soda
Create a 2:1 paste of baking soda and water in a bowl, and mix thoroughly. Using a small brush, apply the mixture to the grout. Let this mixture sit overnight. When the time has come, dampen the mixture with water and use a nylon brush to gently scrub. As you scrub away at the grout, you can use the same paste to clean the tiles themselves. Do NOT use a metal brush to scrub the paste, as this will damage the grout.
Method 3: Commercial Grout Cleaners
Proceed with extreme caution when using this method, as some of the chemicals used in commercial cleaners can be harmful if they come into direct contact with skin. If proceeding in this manner, take care to follow the instructions exactly as described on the solvent bottle and note if any tile material is excluded from use.
Method 4: Call In The Experts!
If you’ve tried the above tips and are still not satisfied with the look and feel of your file (or if you’re just not up for this amount of work!), give the Serv R Us tile experts a call! Our technicians will use high power steam cleaner wands and extraction machines to thoroughly clean the surface of tiles and remove dirt from deep down in the grout. We also have optional clear and colored sealants we can add to the grout to protect it and repel stains between cleanings.
