How Often Should You Clean Your Carpets?

Just how often does your carpet need to be cleaned?  This is one of our most frequently asked questions.  It’s obvious to the naked eye that a carpet cleaning is required when it appears dirty or discolored from foot traffic over a period over time or after a major spill.  While the standard answer seems to be a once-annual cleaning, here are some other important factors to consider.

Manufacturer’s Warranty

Check your paperwork.  If you’ve carpeted your home recently, the manufacturer’s warranty will nearly always contain a clause requiring a specific carpet cleaning frequency.  The requirements will vary depending on the brand and type of fiber, but will usually state that the carpet must be steam-cleaned every 12, 18, or 24 months in order to keep the warranty intact. Some carpet warranty claims require paper proof that your carpet was cleaned at the required intervals, so be sure to verify and save your receipts.

Respiratory Illness/Allergies

Got allergies?  If so, you may want to consider scheduling carpet cleanings two to six times per year, depending on seasonal factors as well as the severity of your allergies. Studies show that allergens tracked in get “stuck” in the fibers of your carpet.  As carpet is walked on (or even vacuumed), the allergy-inducing pollutants are lifted from the fibers, flying into the air provoking an allergic reaction. If you have allergies, start by scheduling carpet cleanings at least once every six months, and schedule more frequently if necessary.

Children & Pets

If one or two adults are the only occupants of your home, you may be able to get away steam cleaning your carpet every two years.  However, if children or pets live with you, expect to schedule cleanings more frequently.  It goes without saying that children are more likely to spill and more likely to track messes through a home.  If you have children, a good routine to establish is a twice-yearly cleaning on areas of high-traffic, and a once-yearly full carpet cleaning.  If you live in a climate that has a particularly wet or dry season, time your cleanings with season changes.

Pet odors are one of the most unpleasant and recognizable smells when entering a home. If you’re an animal lover, at one point or another you’ve seen (and smelled) evidence of your cat or dog’s misadventures.  However, beyond the hairballs, dirt, and other not-so-pleasant surprises your pets track around, dander and bacteria that cause pet odor are also lurking within the fibers of your carpet. Depending on whether your pet is allowed outdoors, most experts recommend pet owners have their carpets cleaned in high traffic areas at least once every six month, and a full carpet cleaning at least once a year. Again, these recommendations are a minimum, and some may find more frequent cleanings are necessary to keep carpets free of pet odors and looking clean.

Cigarette smoke is by far the most invasive odor in a home, and it quickly takes hold of the carpet fibers and padding.  Smoke odors are difficult to extract, so frequent carpet steam cleanings are necessary for smokers. Depending on how frequently you smoke in your home, it may be appropriate to schedule carpet cleanings as frequently as every two months in order to manage the smoke odor.
